I took these two pictures in a visit to Luxembourg City, with just one minute difference, from the very same place, I didn’t move:
So, what’s the difference?
Hint: look at the EXIF properties from both pictures (top and bottom) but don’t get distracted by the fact that Nikon FM-2n is not supposed to write EXIF

The first one looks more pleasant to my eyes. From what I can see, DoF is different, so you used different aperture, and to match EV you changed your shutter speed as well.
I couldn’t find aperture value in the exif data for the first photo.
The second photo looks darker, your lightmeter was confused by some other part of that photo (bright background?). If it’d measure light from girl’s face, I think it’d pick up slower shutter speed and rain would look more “in motion” (as it is on the first photo).
No offence =) I’ve written it all to sum up assumptions I have, just because I couldn’t find vital information about the first photo – shutter speed and aperture value.
Good assumptions, you only missed the text under the photo in Flickr, where is says “AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4D”
I have added the EXIF tags you were missing in the first foto (check it out) but seeing the exposure from the second photo you can see the following:
First, f/4.9 at 1/25 s is about f/4 at 1/30s but the camera just couldn’t make it brighter, f/4.9 is the maximum aperture of the lens (all afordable zooms are around f/3.5-4.5 or f/4.-5.6) and shooting with a 35mm-equivalent of 85mm that speed was very risk, I needed a steady hand. In short, the camera did its best
Second, having f/1.4 available you’d imagine I’d use it (and I did) to be able to shoot at a safe speed (1/60 s at 50mm) and still capture all the light I needed to get detail on the girl’s face.
Possibly I could have done this with a DSLR, the Nikon D3 would even have kept the 50mm focal lenght. But there is yet something different…
I had the first picture both enlarged and printed yesterday, the former directly from film to paper, the latter from the 8MP JPEG I uploaded to Flickr, both on the same lab, 6×8 inches gloss.
This morning I had a look at both and noticed the difference, but just to make sure I interrogated my girlfriend. Under the morning sun light, she found the former brighter, sharper and with better textures.
Imagine what would she say about the second picutre
